Current research in the field of limb development relies almost entirely on animal experiments. There is an urgent need to develop alternative models that do not require animals.

"Our project will use text mining and artificial intelligence to systematically process the data from neuroscience publications and make those data available to scientists free of charge", says Benjamin Ineichen.

"To facilitate the switch to replacement methods, we need to persuade researchers of the new in vitro methods’ value by showing them what the models can and can't do", explains Alexandre Mayran from EPFL.

What does the public think about the 3Rs? Is there a need for an ethical re-evaluation? These are the questions that the EXPLOR3R project will be investigating.

How can we assess the suffering caused during an animal experiment? This research project seeks to make recommendations that will enable more clear-cut ethical decisions to be made in future.  

(5) Benefits and harms of animal testing: a clearer assessment

Are the 3R principles a tool for regulating animal testing so that the minimum amount of harm is caused to the animals? Or are they really about bringing an end to animal testing entirely? Nico Müller is leading a project that seeks to answer these questions.
